Reclaim the streets

Unlocking movement by removing barriers

Cities across Europe are increasingly recognising that reclaiming streets is not just about redesigning infrastructure, but about removing the barriers that limit how people move, meet and stay in public space. This webinar shares leading perspectives on how cities can shift from car-dominated, infrastructure-led approaches toward more inclusive, place-based strategies that prioritise people, health and active urban life. Finnish designer Päivi Raivio explores how mixed-use public spaces can support walking, cycling and playful, social city life through thoughtful design and placemaking. English cycling specialist Neil Carmichael, together with Mosodi, shares pioneering insights from the UK, examining real-world barriers to accessing rail stations through bottom-up audits and translating these into practical, scalable solutions. How do you remove barriers in your citiy to unlock more active, inclusive and connected public spaces?

10:10"Mixed-use spaces for active cities"
Päivi Raivio (Founding Partner @ RaivioBumann / Co-Founder @ Parkly)
How can cities support walkability, cycling and active, playful public life through the design of public spaces? And how can we combine functions and seize the opportunities within mobility infrastructure to create more welcoming and people-oriented cities? In this presentation, urban design and placemaking specialist Päivi Raivio explores the public space network, emerging approaches to mobility solutions, and how cities can shift from technical, infrastructure-led thinking toward place-led thinking, supporting cycling, walking and staying in place. She explains the Parkly Parklet as well as the Lucerne street transformation project. Through real-world case examples from Parkly's work across cities, she brings to life what it truly means to transform public space and what municipal leaders can take back and put into practice from day one.
10:40"Active travel railway station audits"
Neil Carmichael (owner @ Carmichael Sports Ltd)
How accessible are our transport systems in practice? In the UK, this challenge is particularly visible around the rail network. Neil Carmichael, together with Mosodi, an innovative transport planning consultancy, has led a pioneering effort to assess access to rail from a bottom-up, user-focused perspective. Through detailed audits of more than 40 stations across the Northern Trains network, this work examines the real experience of walking, wheeling and cycling to stations, identifying barriers, gaps and opportunities for improvement. The project delivers a clear overview of strengths and weaknesses, but also practical, station-specific action plans, while equipping stakeholders such as local authorities and Active Travel England with the insights needed for more strategic, collaborative decision-making.
